No transfer tax
Texas charges no state or local transfer tax on a home sale.
Option period
Most Texas contracts let the buyer pay an option fee for a set number of days to inspect and back out for any reason.
Seller's Disclosure Notice
Most sellers must give a Seller's Disclosure Notice, including flood questions.
Homestead exemption
Owners who live in the home can take a homestead exemption, and the taxable value of a homestead can rise at most 10% a year.
Protest your value
If the appraisal district values your home too high, you can protest it each year.
MUDs and PIDs
Many newer areas are in a Municipal Utility District or Public Improvement District that adds to the tax bill. Sellers must disclose them.
